A13 crash: taxi drivers lucky escape

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2qADstd
A taxi driver had a very lucky escape yesterday when his vehicle was flipped onto its side after a major road accident.
The accident, which happened on the A13 near the Wennington turn off, required the specialist cutting crew from East Ham fire station as well as appliances from both Wennington and Barking.
A second vehicle involved in the accident was found to have it's wheels torn off.
Incredibly no serious injury has been reported to the driver of either vehicle, despite being trapped in their vehicles for 45 minutes.

Windsor and Maidenhead officer fears a lack of control over Uber drivers

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2GWmxvR
According to local sources Uber drivers are scrapping their minicab licences in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to sign up for Transport for London instead.
At a recent Licensing Panel meeting this week their are concerns that the switch being made by drivers could mean having less control over drivers operating in the Royal Borough.
Ride-hailing firm Uber currently has an operating licence in Maidenhead and Windsor, however cross-border hiring regulations means drivers can sign up elsewhere, like with TfL, and work unchecked in the their licensing area.
Greg Nelson, the trading standards lead, said: “I’m not particularly happy with this because the whole purpose of licensing is we have some degree of control on the vehicles operating in our area.
“If Uber drivers are waiting somewhere in the Royal Borough, parked illegally, there is nothing we can do about their physical presence.”
Panel members on the council also recommended that minicab drivers licensed in the area should have to pay for safeguarding training that all drivers must complete.
Cllr Maureen Hunt (Con, Hurley and Walthams) said: “Our taxi drivers are going to have to pay for this safeguarding training but Uber won’t.
“We have to look at the fairness of this.”

US judge rules UberBLACK drivers as independent contractors

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2HwlVtV
A judge in Philadelphia, USA, has ruled that drivers that work on Uber's limo service, UberBLACK, are not employees and are independent contractors. Uber are battling against a number of rulings, and this victory could well be considered crucial. The decision was made by U.S district Judge Michael Baylson on Wednesday 11, stating that Uber do not "exert enough control over drivers" who work on the ride-hailing firm's limo service platform. The plaintiffs filed the Philadelphia lawsuit in February 2016 stating that Uber failed to pay them minimum wage and overtime, two of the minimum requirements needed to be met by an employer, but Judge Baylson said that the drivers work when they want to and are free to rest or run personal errands in between rides, benefits that you wouldn't get if you were employees. According to a report in CNBC, a lawyer for the plaintiffs has said he would appeal the ruling.

Maidenhead Council Officer Raises Fears Over Lack Of Control Of Uber Drivers And Blames TfL

Uber drivers are ditching their private hire licences with the Royal Borough and signing up for Transport for London (TfL) instead.

Greg Nelson, the council’s trading standards lead, told a meeting of the Royal Borough’s Licensing Panel on Tuesday that the switch means the council has less control over drivers operating in the area.

While Uber has an operating licence with the council, regulations do not prevent drivers signed up to the transport app from being registered with TfL but working elsewhere.

Mr Nelson said: “I’m not particularly happy with this because the whole purpose of licensing is we have some degree of control on the vehicles operating in our area.

“If Uber drivers are waiting somewhere in the Royal Borough, parked illegally, there is nothing we can do about their physical presence.”

Mr Nelson added that by relinquishing their licences, Uber drivers would not have to comply with the council’s proposed safeguarding training for Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers.

Cllr Maureen Hunt (Con, Hurley and Walthams) said: “Our taxi drivers are going to have to pay for this safeguarding training but Uber won’t.

“We have to look at the fairness of this.”

During the meeting at Maidenhead Town Hall, panel members recommended that private hire drivers registered with the council should pay for mandatory safeguarding training.

Royal Borough taxi driver Mohammed Yasin said after the meeting: “I’m not against the training but the cost shouldn’t be placed on the drivers.

“This is for public safety, why can’t the council locate funds from the public purse?

“Otherwise, this is an extra tax for taxi drivers.”

The cost of the training was discussed in part two of the meeting, which the public and press are not able to attend.
