THE LTFUC PURCHASE A MUCH NEEDED SPECIALLY ADAPTED TRICYCLE FOR LITTLE HOPE, AGED 5

On Tuesday 17th April I went along with our Appeals Officer, Colin Greaves, to officially present little Hope aged 5 with a Tricycle, cost £945, to help and enable her to walk again as she suffers from a very rare metabolic condition called GA1 (Glutaric Aciduria 1), which unfortunately also caused her to suffer brain damage.  Her condition affects muscle tone, strength and motor control throughout her body which has made her very weak and her mobility extremely difficult.  The Tricycle has been specially adapted for her and will great benefit her physically, socially and emotionally.

Hope lives with her grandparents who said since she has received the Tricycle she cannot wait to get back on it after school and it is obvious that she has already started to get a tremendous sense of enjoyment and achievement from it, accompanied by lots of fun.

Every month Colin looks into the numerous Appeals that the LTFUC receive and the Committee were very pleased on this occasion to grant this appeal for such a worthy cause.

Public decision to be made on Uber Brighton licence renewal next week

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2J3cTo4
The decision on whether or not ride-hailing giants Uber will have it's Brighton and Hove licence renewed or not will be heard in public next week. Uber had originally been granted a licence to operate in Brighton back in 2015 but did not launch their services until late 2016. Uber were subsequently re-licensed for an additional year, taking them through to 2017. Following Transport for London's decision to not renew Uber's London operating licence in 2017, Brighton and Hove town hall officers decided to just renew Uber's licence for a following 6 months, but this time with four new conditions: -Not to block officials from using the the app.-To report serious complaints to the council.-To ensure that rides booked by UBL are provided by Brighton drivers .-To ensure all UBL drivers have disability training. The additional 6 months are almost up and it's time for a decision to be made on whether or not Uber will be granted a new operators licence. Following a campaign by taxi drivers, who want to see Uber banned from Brighton and Hove altogether following a number of concerns including challenging Uber's status as an operator, the ongoing TfL appeal and Uber's failure to report sexual attacks in London. According to a report in Brighton and Hove News, well over 200,000 people have used the Uber service in Brighton since it's launch.

Uber to appeal Slovakia ban after District Court mistake

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2EX15kE
Controversial ride-hailing firm Uber has said they will appeal Slovakia's decision to ban all operations. The ban was put against the Silicon Valley giants because it's drivers and vehicles did not meet the requirements set by Slovak legislations, but according to a report in the Slovak Spectator, the Bratislava District Court failed to deliver the decision correctly, leaving an opening for Uber to appeal. Uber's spokesperson for Slovakia, Miroslava Jozova, has said that they will look to appeal as soon as possible as he feels services such as Uber's should be a standard part of the options for mobility in every modern city. Jozova claims that 80 percent of people in Slovakia want the Uber service to remain and intends to do his "utmost" to assure Uber returns to Bratislava as soon as possible. Bratislava taxi drivers have protested on a number of occasions against the ride-hailing app and will no doubt continue their demonstrations if Uber's ban is overturned.

BREAKING NEWS: Statement from The ITA to the City of London

At midnight on Sunday 15th 2018  the ITA decided to withdraw the motion to call direct action over the decision made by the City of London to grant access through Bank Junction for the duration of The Commonwealth Games.

Members of the ITA reserve their right to resume direct action at any other time.

The decision is in response to concerns by  officials that the security risk in the area could rise sharply if the area became ‘over populated’.

The point must be emphasised that whilst the ITA considers statements that pertain to a compromise in safety, we will not automatically take on board the legitimacy of  that statement.

The ITA has it’s own checks and balances set in place before direct action is announced publicly.

More-so, the propensity for local authorities to ‘scare monger’ is a tried and tested one, and we will not succumb to disingenuous rhetoric to justify unjust policies.

Compounding on this, it is a timely reminder that the restriction imposed on licensed Taxis using Bank Junction as a ‘through route’ is implemented under the banner ‘Bank of Safety’. The service provided by London’s Licensed taxi trade (black cabs) is- according to TfL and the CofL’s own verifiable data- the safest transport option available, so once again, we call upon the City of London to lift the restriction on taxis forthwith.

Failing that, provide a satisfactory reason why the public should be denied access to the only door-to-door public service option available.

Assuming an observant position, we urge the City of London to lead the way and resume negotiations with relevant trade groups. It is not the mark of a progressive or democratic process to dismiss trade representatives who’s advocacy to serve their members is far higher than that enjoyed by the policy makers.

We trust the City of London will find our request reasonable

Women fraudster sentenced after claiming £9,000 in taxi fares

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2voYVe7
A woman who falsely claimed over £9,000 in taxi fares has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
Tina Shillingford, 49, from West Wickham, Kent, pleaded guilty at Croydon crown court on April 16th.
The court heard how Ms Shillingford's daughter was entitled to free taxi rides between her home and the University of Westminster, via The Student Loans Company, due to a long-term back ailment.
It was then discovered that Ms Shillingford had submitted taxi claims totalling £9,744 over a 20 month period from November 2012 in her daughters name whilst her daughter was abroad.
The McGrath and Co. receptionist was caught after work colleagues suspicions were raised when they noticed a book of taxi reciepts on her computer.
Initially both Ms Shillingford and her daughter Leanne were accused of fraud, however it was accepted by prosecutors that Leanne Shillingford was an unwitting victim in the fraud.
Shillingford received a 12 month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months as well as 180 hours of community service from Judge Alice Robinson.
Ms Shilling has subsequently paid back all of the money that had been obtained illegally.

Electric Vehicles: “The penny has dropped”

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2JTa8XH
Sometimes social media throws up some great posts that only a handful of drivers get to read.
London cabbie, Cliff Mahoney, gives his take on where electric vehicle technology is heading in the capital and how opinions maybe shifting as more expensive vehicles become the norm.
The penny has dropped!Driving in London is about to change foreverand it maybe for the better? At least for London’s Cabbies and your kids.We all know that pollution is bad in the metropolis and it needs something doing about it. Well that's what is happening. Let's forget the Taxi trade for a moment. Very shortly a clean air area will come in. This is within the boundary of the North / South circular. If you own a older diesel vehicle it will cost you a whopping £35 a day to move within this area. Meanwhile they are looking to trial a Non petrol or diesel vehicles zone in a dozen or so streets in Hoxton. This new initiative is to force people into electric vehicles (EV). It won't get any resistance as it's just a few back streets that even Taxis rarely use. But here's the real light bulb moment. The city of London want to make the Beech Street tunnel EV only. Like the 20 mph speed limits, before you know it the whole of greater London will be a EV only zone. It will probably start with the current congestion charge area. So I'm slightly regretting updating the wife's diesel last year.Everyone will have to purchase EV's and that's also an issue because they are about a third more expensive than the current model car you drive. This will make owning a car a very expensive option and out of most people's reach. Look at the price jump of the new TXE taxi which is I'm reliably informed a Volvo XC60 converted to be a cab. The Volvo is £60k in basic form much the same as this new Taxi.So how to get around this new green clean city where's the transport infrastructure if we can no longer afford the family car? Well it's there already or the seeds are there. Very soon we will have Cross Rail, there are already many car share rental schemes, many cycle lanes to tempt you, plus cycle hire, 120,000 cheap third world minicabs, rickshaws and of course the iconic black Taxis. Hopefully we will loose a chunk of these polluting minicabs, that app probably seemed like a good idea. But it's a monster that's run away with them. Plus the robbing rickshaws will be run off our streets, but three mayors haven't done a thing so who knows?Once all the cars are off the road then we will be able to get around much easier and more people will use Taxis. But it's a bugger if you have a family car and this zone will eventually stretch out to the whole of the greater London area. Once they have cleaned up greater London and your kids can breathe again. They will start in all the other big city's and towns. Diesel will be confined to the country side, where they burn all the fossil fuel to provide power for all these new EV vehicles.I'm not quite at the point of rushing into Ascott's and strapping myself up for a new EV. But I'm looking very close at this vehicle now. Although if your a cabbie and you trap a job to the New Nobu Hotel Shoreditch you won't be dropping them at the door soon, unless your in a TXE.“
If you’ve got a post or an opinion you’d like to share with the trade get in touch!
