Around 100 war veterans have been guests of honour in a tour of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The three day trip to Portsmouth was organised by Gary Belsey, chairman of The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans.
The volunteers from the London taxi driving industry, picked up the ex-servicemen from their homes and escorted the war heroes on the three day event.
The veterans were made up of former soldiers, sailors and airmen, as well as Chelsea Pensioners in full regalia, conplete with medals.
The ex-servicemen have also spent time at Portsmouth Naval Bases, St Anns Church, in memory of those who served on the Arctic Convoys during World War Two.
It wasn't just World War Two veterans who took part in the trip, as ex-servicemen who served in conflicts such as Afghanistan were also in attendance.
The trip also has a special significance to the charity as it marks its 70th year in operation taking veterans as far afield as the Netherlands and Normandy as well as sites in the UK.

Employment Appeal Tribunal dismisses Addison Lee’s latest appeal

The Employment Appeal Tribunal has judged that Addison Lee courier Chris Gascoigne was wrongly classified as an independent contractor and, as a result, is entitled to unpaid holiday. The EAT’s verdict mirrors last year’s judgement from the Employment Tribunal.
The case was brought by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and deals another blow to transport services giant Addison Lee, confirming the prediction of Kevin Valentine, the head of Addison Lee’s courier business. Valentine made the prediction in December 2016, when Addison Lee blacklisted IWGB member Andrew Boxer. The company had learnt that Boxer had a similar claim against his previous employer Excel and Valentine told Boxer that the company could not afford another workers’ rights case, prophesying that “your union is going to win”.
IWGB General Secretary Dr. Jason Moyer-Lee said: “For anyone who has the vaguest awareness of employment law, the fact that Addison Lee has lost its appeal will come as no surprise. The real shocker is that, even though tribunal after tribunal after tribunal has shown that companies in the so-called ‘gig economy’ are unlawfully depriving their workers of rights, the government still does nothing but talk.”Jason Moyer-Lee called for the resignation of Business Secretary Greg Clark after the government’s response to the Taylor Review on Modern Employment Practices.

James Phillips and then received a police escort to the Dutch Cavalry Museum at Amersfoort.
After lunch at the barracks, they were driven to their hotel at the Wageningen International Congress Centre, where the 34 veterans later had dinner.
On Friday 4 May, Remembrance Day in the Netherlands, the veterans were driven to Bronbeek Royal Home for Retired Military Personnel for lunch. The veterans then paid a short visit to Oosterbeek CWGC to pay their respects to their fallen comrades buried there.
In the evening, the veterans were invited to attend a remembrance service at Heteren. On the following day the veterans took part in the Liberation Day parade at Wageningen. They joined the parade in golf carts and a London taxi. After the parade, the veterans were invited to attend a gala dinner before heading home the next day.

The Taxi Charity For Military Veterans (formerly known as the London Taxi Benevolent Association For War Disabled) was formed in Fulham in 1948.Its object then was to help war veterans, in their homes and hospitals, throughout London and the home counties, by providing entertainment, outings and much needed specialised equipment.
To this day the objective remains simple; to work for the benefit, comfort and enjoyment of military veterans.

New London Silvertown tunnel given the go-ahead

May 11, 2018 at 10:24AM https://ift.tt/2ufVjKI THESE POSTS ARE NOT OUR ENDORSEMENT
Transport for London has today been granted a Development Consent Order by the Department for Transport to deliver the Silvertown Tunnel - a new twin-bore road tunnel under the Thames in east London.
The new tunnel is to be welcomed by the taxi trade, however once the project is completed a toll charge on both the Blackwall and new Silvertown will be implemented. Their are also restrictions relateting to vehicle emissions on the newly created relief tunnel.
The tunnel, which is set to open in 2023, will help ease the current serious congestion at Blackwall Tunnel and improve the reliability and resilience of the road network in east London. It will enable significantly improved cross-river public transport connections, with up to 37 buses an hour using the tunnel - all of which will be hybrid, electric or at least with the highest Euro VI emission standard. Further pedestrian and cycling improvements will also be made on both sides of the river.Work will be carried out on the areas surrounding the entrances to the tunnel to improve conditions for local residents and create safe, attractive new walking and cycling routes around Royal Victoria and the Greenwich Peninsula. While consent was confirmed today by the Secretary of State, a number of conditions were included. TfL is now working with local boroughs, landowners, stakeholders and other affected parties to understand the implications of these conditions, so that this vital infrastructure project can start as soon as possible. With congestion and air quality around the Blackwall Tunnel predicted to get worse in the coming years as London's population grows, the Silvertown Tunnel is vital to providing a more reliable crossing as well as ensuring goods and services can continue to move around London. Drivers using the Blackwall Tunnel regularly get caught up in delays of 20 minutes or more during busy times, leading to around a million hours being wasted in queues every year and costing the economy an estimated £10m. When incidents cause the tunnel to close temporarily, three-mile tail-backs can occur in under six minutes. The new Silvertown Tunnel will be privately financed through a Design, Build, Finance and Maintain contract, with the successful delivery partner receiving payments from TfL once the tunnel is open and available for use. These will be made in part via a user charge on both the new tunnel and the existing Blackwall Tunnel, which will also help to ensure traffic is effectively managed and journey reliability and air quality are improved. The exact charge levels for various types of vehicles using the tunnel will be decided closer to the opening date. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:'I'm delighted that the green light has been given to progress with the Silvertown Tunnel. New river crossings are vital for the future prosperity of east London, and the scheme will have a substantial impact unlocking new jobs and economic growth, while easing congestion and poor air quality in the area.'Since I became Mayor I've been determined to ensure the Silvertown Tunnel doesn't have a detrimental impact on our environment. That's why the new plans have such a focus on cleaner transport, with only buses with the highest emission standard using the tunnel, and substantial investment in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.'
All new fleet of chauffeur driven Electric Jaguar's to hit London Heathrow this summer

Giant car makers Jaguar have partnered with Britain's busiest airport Heathrow to ferry passengers to their destinations in the luxury Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV. A fleet of 200 chauffeur driven vehicles will be available to hire, and the cost into central London is said to match those of a London black taxi. Organisers of the deal have said that the service could cover up to 1,000 trips a day, helping to reduce the airports nitrogen oxide output by as much as eight tonnes per year. The service is set to become live this summer, making it the largest chauffeur driven fleet of electric vehicles in the country. The estimated cost of a trip into central London will be between £70-£80, a similar price of a journey in one of London's iconic taxi's. What would this mean for the worlds finest taxi service? Waiting times at Heathrow airport can range anywhere from 1 hour to 5 hours depending on the time of year. According to a report in the Sun, the new service will also see the We Know Group install the UK's largest electric car charging hub at Heathrow. Are you an airport driver? How will this affect your business? Let us know in the comments below.
