Uber apply the panic button!

The much maligned minicab app Uber are launching several new ‘safety’ features including a panic button and options to be tracked by several family members.
The firms Chief Legal Officer, Tony West, announced that Uber will show their commitment to safety, after coming under severe global scrutiny, by launching several new initiatives in America. If successful the features are expected to pushed out worldwide.Mr West said: "We're rolling out a new emergency button in the app that can automatically communicate the car's location to a 911 centre."We've added a feature that allows riders to share live trip information with up to five trusted contacts, so there are multiple sets of eyes on each ride."Many sceptics of the controversial firm are suggesting Uber are simply reinventing the wheel as most mobiles are already capable of contacting the emergency services simply by dialling 999 even when a phone is locked and has no calling credit.
There are also questions surrounding how these features will help heavily intoxicated users.
Only last week London Uber driver Muhammad Khurram Durrani was found guilty of one count of rape. Mr Durrani received a twelve year sentence for raping a heavily intoxicated girl in the back of his vehicle.
Tony West went on to add “Dara (Khosrowshahi) recently said that sexual predators often look for a dark corner. Our message to the world is that we need to turn the lights on. It starts with improving our product and policies, but it requires so much more, and we’re in it for the long haul. Together, we can make meaningful progress towards ending sexual violence. Our commitment to you is that when we say we stand for safety, we mean it.”

ABD: “No Benefit From Speed Awareness Courses”
via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2rFlKoK

The Department for Transport have, after a long delay, published the Ipsos-MORI report that they commissioned into the effectiveness of speed awareness courses.
This is the key statement in the Executive Summary: "this study did not find that participation in NSAC [National Speed Awareness Course] had a statistically significant effect on the number or severity of injury collisions". In other words, as the Alliance of British Drivers has repeatedly said, this unethical and legally dubious diversion of drivers to speed awareness courses is primarily about generating money, not about road safety because there is no evidence of any real benefit. Indeed drivers who have attended such courses might be interested in another statement in the report: "the NSAC was not designed to reduce the incidence of collisions". So what exactly is the objective one might ask as it appears not to be focussed on improving road safety? Was the study too small to produce statistically significant results? Not exactly because the records of 2.2 million drivers, of whom 1.4 million had accepted a course offer, were studied over a period of 4 years. This data was linked to subsequent speed reoffending and involvement in collisions to produce the report's conclusions. That's a large sample. The only impact they found was that there was a reduction in reoffending after involvement in an NSAC, but that is surely hardly surprising because drivers might simply take more care about speeding after being caught for one offence because you cannot be offered a second NSAC within 3 years. The report argues that an even bigger study might prove there is some benefit but the proponents of such courses are surely clutching at straws if they think that expense is worthwhile.Regardless we suggest speed awareness courses should cease to be a money making industry for ex-police and road safety officers and should only be offered to people who are actually convicted of speeding offences. Otherwise they are just a way to bribe the police to look the other way when an offence is committed (a waiver of prosecution as they call it).

Damon Albarn had a bit of a lucky escape after leaving his laptop in the back of a London taxi.
Blur and Gorillaz frontman Albarn, whose last release was the 2017 Gorillaz album Humanz, had the master copy of the new Gorillaz album stored on his laptop.
Albarn jumped into a Black cab after leaving the Groucho Club in Dean Street, London, however upon leaving the taxi, he left the laptop on the back seat of the cab.
Losing the laptop could have cost the group a substantial amount of money, running into millions of pounds.
Thankfully the laptop, with the new album scheduled for release next month on it, was returned to its rightful owner by the honest taxi driver.

Cape Town's Transport Enforcement Unit undertook a number of checks on Taxis and ride hailing vehicles, and within a couple of days had impounded 62 Uber vehicles for not having operating licences or operating in contravention of their licences. According to a report in the iol, one Uber driver fled the checkpoint nearly running over a traffic officer. The driver was eventually caught. Although Uber have yet to confirm whether the man was driving for them, officers said the vehicle had a clear Uber logo on the windscreen as all their drivers do. Uber Technologies Inc along with licensing authorities have a major responsibility to make sure all drivers comply with all applicable rules of the industry they operate in. Which licensing authority do you operate in? Do you think enough is being done to deal with rogue drivers and maintain the highest industry standards?
