Uber driver shoots dead passenger in Denvor Colorado

According to sources on Friday, an Uber driver fatally shot a passenger in Denver, Colorado. It's not yet clear what started the altercation but eye witnesses said they saw police officers performing CPR on the victim in a failed attempt to save his life. The driver and alleged gunman, Michael Andre Hancock, 29, is said to be in police custody, arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, Reuters reported. The shooting took place at around 3am local time. It has been confirmed that multiple shots were fired and the deceased, a Mr Hyundai Kim, 45, was hit with more than one bullet. Aerial shots of the incidents location showed the vehicle crashed into wall. Due to ongoing investigations Denver police are unable to give anymore details on the shooting.
Uber's driver screening process Uber Technologies Inc have constantly been scrutinised for their lack of background checks, with a number of reports of drivers with previous criminal records gaining easy access to the drivers platform. CNN reported this week on an Uber driver named Talal Chammout, a man who had an assault conviction to his name, and a six-and-a-half year jail sentence on his record for being a felon in possession of firearms. The judge who sentenced Chammout in that case listed off a number of allegations against him: he had been accused of shooting a juvenile in the leg, seeking to smuggle rocket launchers into the Middle East, attacking his wife with a crowbar and plotting to hire a hit man. All these convictions and allegations were not enough to prevent Chammout from obtaining a licence to drive for the controversial ride-hailing app. Three months after joining the Silicon Valley app he followed one of his passengers home and sexually assaulted her. Chammout is now serving 25 years in prison. Traditional taxi firms and even some politicians globally have pushed for tighter and more rigorous vetting processes to be it place for ride-hailing companies. This may serve as a small comfort the past victims, but many would say it's too little too late

LTDA’s McNamara: "The real cost of Uber"
via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2LREb2T

June 02, 2018 at 12:25PM https://ift.tt/2ufVjKI THESE POSTS ARE NOT OUR ENDORSEMENT

Last week we launched a campaign to expose the “real cost of Uber. The public needs to know that whilst Uber is cheap (if only by completely undercutting all competition) there is a real cost to taking an Uber. The initial launch features a website www.realcostofuber.com which will be updated over the coming weeks as we approach the licensing hearing in late June. I will also be emailing all our members with details on how they can further support our initiatives. With all the furore over the Cambridge Analytica use of private data we feel the public needs to know how Uber handles its data. Do people know what data Uber is stealing from their phones? Its terms and conditions are shocking and revealing. The company not only has access to a passenger’s location, but also can take information from their calendar and see the last webpage they browsed. Do people really think that Uber has cleaned up its act and changed its immoral business practices? We all know Uber refuses to give its drivers the most basic rights, but it is also avoiding paying up to £20 million in tax by billing drivers offshore. This is disgraceful and denies our already over-stretched public services vital funding.
Are people aware that their safety is at risk not only when they get in an Uber, but also just by being on the same street as an Uber? We all know that its drivers are undertrained, potentially not licensed in London, and potentially uninsured. This is the real cost of getting an Uber and we need to make sure everyone knows it. As Uber’s licensing case approaches we need as many people as we can to sign the the LTDA’s petition and email Mayor Sadiq Khan to demand that Uber does not get relicensed. Please read the petition, sign up and share it at www.realcostofuber.com. Meanwhile, Uber is continuing its “makes sense” PR charade. This time it is advertising its supposed “transparent pricing” by saying that passengers can see a fare estimate before they get a car. There are “no surprises” it claims. However, with Uber’s predatory pricing this estimate is often a surprise in itself. As Uber keeps pushing out ads on social media about how it is apparently the obvious choice, the LTDA will do the same and remind people what the real cost of taking an Uber is.

Nuneaton Taxi driver completes three thousand mile round trip to the champions league final in Kiev

Once in a lifetime opportunities don't come around too often, but when Liverpool F.C made it to the champions league final in Kiev the race was on to grab a ticket and arrange your travel to the capital of Ukraine. Taxi driver and owner of taxi firm Direct Taxi, Alan Lawson was desperate to make it to Kiev to watch his beloved Liverpool take on the might of Real Madrid, but when checking the price of plane tickets, a whopping £1,400, he was left pondering on his options. A suggestion from a friend was to offer a road trip through seven countries to get to the stadium for five other fans. The idea was to good to bypass for Alan and after offering his services online, it wasn't long before he had a taxi full of cheering reds. At a price of £350 per person it was a no brainer for the diehard supporters. The long journey started in Nuneaton on the Wednesday night, arriving in Kiev by Friday. The match was played on the Saturday, ending in a 3-1 defeat, and their long ride home begin on Sunday. Mr Lawson confirmed in a report in the Coventry Live that this was the longest fare the firm had ever completed. What's the longest fare as a driver you've ever completed? Let us know in the comments below.
