Could a clear tint be the answer in protecting yourself against moped attackers

With moped mugging on the increase in London, taxi drivers have never been in a more vulnerable position. The damage that these attacks cause can run into hundreds of pounds, as well as leaving the driver wide open to physical assault once a window has been shattered. As a result of the proliferation of these attacks, TaxiPoint decided to investigate the best way forward as to how drivers may be able to protect themselves. We contacted a company called Eurotint, based in White City, to find out if there was a way of stopping a window from imploding after being attacked with an object. After discussing the requirements needed for a taxi, the consultant at Eurotint suggested that a clear tint may be the way forward. This option may afford a driver some protection against attack, it would not stop the glass from shattering, but it may take several attempts for a would-be attacker to get through the glass, giving the driver enough time to take evasive action, as well as potentially protecting a driver from injury.
The cost for applying the clear tint to the front two windows would be approxinately £150. It is worth remembering there are also many good retailers out their so worth shopping around.
A spokesperson at Transport for London told TaxiPoint: "Anything that protects the safety of drivers without impeding their vision and therefore the safety of their driving, would be welcomed by TfL, providing the manufacturer says it is safe to install on the specific vehicles."

Following Barrow council's highly controversial decision to ban England flags from all taxi's and private hire vehicles during the World Cup, bosses have now decided to allow drivers to display their support for the nations football team. Pressure by taxi drivers who slammed the ban eventually took its toll on council bosses who they branded "unpatriotic". Taxi and private hire representatives said they had never known flags to of caused any such safety issues which were being claimed by the council, and all drivers want to do is show their support during a tournament that only comes around every four years. As reported in the Mail, nwemail, councillor Tony Callister said taxi drivers should be mindful of not putting anything on their vehicle which could obscure their vision and put the public at risk.
Uber VAT tax tribunal date set as appeal gathers pace

The Good Law Project who fundraised to take action against Uber to force it to hand over a VAT invoice are set for a Tax Tribunal on 11th July 2018
According to the law firm the purpose of the action was to force Uber to add VAT to its taxi fares and remit past VAT – which are estimated to total around £1bn – to HMRC.
To obtain a VAT invoice, founder Jo Maugham QC, initiated proceedings in the High Court. Uber, as is its entitlement, threatened to pursue him for costs if he failed.
Although the law firm are confident the claim has very good prospects of succeeding, Mr Maugham has no financial interest in the litigation and the costs after any appeals could easily bankrupt him. Advice on costs protection from a QC specialising in the field and said Good Law Project would have to show they had pursued any other remedy they had.
However, the law firm remains confident that they can get to the same end result – Uber charging VAT and handing it over to HMRC – if someone who pays VAT takes an Uber and successfully claims against HMRC an entitlement to deduct the VAT on that fare.
A spokesperson said “Such a claim can be made in an environment in which, at least to First-tier Tribunal level, the loser need not pay the winners’ costs. So we adjourned the claim against Uber and began to push the claim against HMRC (which we had initiated at the same time as the claim against Uber in the High Court).”

Go-Ahead enters ridesharing market with UK’s most ambitious on-demand bus service

The Go-Ahead Group is to launch the UK’s most ambitious demand-responsive bus service, allowing passengers to summon a bus to pick them up on a street corner of their choice. From 25 June, workers, residents and students in a 12-square mile area around Oxford will be able to request a bus pick-up within minutes at a “virtual bus stop” at their convenience using a new mobile app.The PickMeUp service, which is being piloted by the Oxford Bus Company on behalf of the Go-Ahead Group, aims to meet the changing needs of people in parts of the city where passenger numbers increase sharply at certain times of day, making it more difficult to manage through scheduled services. The new concept will be operated using 17-seat minibuses with free WiFi, USB charging points, wheelchair access and comfortable high-back seating. Front-end and back-end technology for the service has been developed in partnership with Via, a US leader in ride-sharing technology with its own operations in New York City, Chicago and Washington DC.Employers in the Eastern Arc around Oxford are to be offered tailored subscription packages providing discounted or free travel for their staff, creating a quick, easy and convenient alternative to commuting by car.Experts estimate that the UK’s ride-sharing market will be worth £2.6bn by 2022. International projections suggest that car ownership could drop by as much as 80% by 2030, with passengers migrating towards alternative models of transport.PickMeUp builds on recent transport innovations by Go-Ahead, which is the largest operator of electric buses in Europe, and is the operator of UK’s only all-electric bus garage in central London. In February, the company invested in a Frankfurt-based all-electric car sharing business Mobileeee, and Go-Ahead is set to pilot the UK’s first bus ticket system using iBeacons in the North East later this year.Commenting on the new service, Go-Ahead Group Chief Executive David Brown said: “We’ve listened closely to what the local community has been asking for in Oxford. Passengers are keen for a quick, easy and flexible way to get to work or to college.“PickMeUp is intended to be a partnership model with local businesses – we want to help them get their staff to work in a quick, simple, convenient and cost-effective way.“On a broader level, we firmly believe that ride-sharing is part of the solution to congestion and pollution in our towns and cities. It’s essential that we provide services that will tempt people out of their cars and technology will be key to that challenge.”
