A private hire driver from Birmingham has had his licence revoked after reports were made to West Midlands Police of a sexual assault on a female passenger. The unnamed driver has been accused of grabbing the woman by her scarf in an attempt to "stick his tongue down her throat". The female passenger managed to pull back but the driver dragged her closer and tried to kiss her again but was unable to, so instead he licked her face. Following the reports, licensing officials tracked down the driver at his home and informed him that his licence was being revoked. According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, the driver has since appealed to magistrates against the revocation.
New policies since Uber London licence rejection shouldn’t be considered says Pidgeon

New policies since Uber’s London licence rejection in September 2017 shouldn’t be considered in the forthcoming appeal says London Assemby member Caroline Pidgeon.
The chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee went on to say she expects “a full examination of whether Uber were a fit and proper operator” in the court appeal starting next week as Uber look to win back its London operators licence.
Caroline Pidgeon told TaxiPoint: “What I expect from the appeal hearing is quite simple – a full examination of whether Uber were a fit and proper operator to have their licence renewed at the time that TfL made their decision last September.
“TfL decision was based on extensive evidence about the record of Uber and it is vital that this information is fully examined.““What I do not believe is relevant is statements made and new policies adopted by Uber since last September as the only relevant issue of the appeal hearing is the facts and evidence that existed at the time of the initial decision.”
Recently, Ms Pidgeon has also warned Mayor Sadiq Khan of the dangers posed by Uber drivers using mobile phones to except jobs while at the wheel. She highlighted the fact that the Uber app effectively forces drivers to interact with their phone while driving.
The Assembly Member urged the mayor to speak to the Met Police about issuing similar guidance in London.
The London Assembly transport leader told LTDA’s TAXI: “It is against the law to use your phone whilst driving, yet many apps expect drivers to interact whilst driving, which puts all road users at risk.”

Ride-hailing app Uber has launched a year-long scheme which will provide cash rewards drivers who switch to using electric cars. The minicab firm launched the “EV Champions Initiative”, a pilot program for driver-partners to deliver at least 5 million EV rides over the next year. The program kicked off this week in seven cities — Austin, Los Angeles, Montreal, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle — in partnership with leading electric vehicle adoption experts. The program builds off existing pilots in both Pittsburgh and Portland respectively.Financial rewards for drivers who chose to make the switch to EVs is subject to change from city to city. According to the LA Times the ride-hailing firm plans to pay drivers in Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Francisco an extra $1 (76p) per ride, with San Diego drivers capping the fee at $20 (£15.20) each week.Giovanni Circella, director of the 3 Revolutions Future Mobility Program at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, said: “EV Champions brings together two of today’s transportation revolutions: clean electric vehicles and shared-use mobility. We look forward to partnering with Uber to evaluate how the initiative can improve consumer understanding and adoption of EVs.”

TfL Must Revoke Uber's Licence, Plus All Apps Must Be Regulated....by Lenny Etheridge
Uber cannot possibly win their appeal.
Either way it will be the same outcome - they'll carry on regardless.
Uber must have their license revoked. If not, they must be regulated to the full extent of existing rules, which so far TfL have refused to enforce.
Running Uber out of town or forcing TfL to apply existing regulations and police them, will have much the same effect.
If Uber lose their final appeal against the UPHD employment case in October, they'll be dead in the water anyway.
After Uber is put down, we still have to ensure all Apps (including our own) are regulated.
At this moment in time there is no regulator for Apps.
Either TfL or the DfT must step up to the plate, accept responsibility and take control of these lawless, unaccountable Apps.
Otherwise our whole trade will become Uberesque; totally reliant upon an App master, as our street hail is hoovered up by App companies with no regard for the driver.
Uber is the beginning of our struggle, not the end.
The reason we are in the shit today is because of past mistakes - we were advised to have 'Ply for Hire' legally defined decades ago when there was no opposition to the definition.
Today we're paying the price of previous apathy.
Don't sell all your tomorrows for today's takings.
APPS MUST BE REGULATED!

LTDA branch elections suspended following claims of “threats and intimidation”

The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association branch elections have been suspended following claims of “threats and intimidation”.
The Central Branch election was due to take place on Wednesday 27th June however the two main candidates electioneering on social media have been embroiled in claims and counter claims of “threats and intimidation”.
The LTDA have shown concern over a small number of members who see the elections as a “significant event”, so much so ,talk about the trade is usually diverted away from trade matters and instead focuses heavily on membership rules and internal politics.
Richard Massett, LTDA Chairman, added in an email to members:
“We have even received various reports that people who are not even LTDA members and some of whom are involved with other organisations and groups, have somehow become involved in this unpleasant behaviour with the result that genuine members now feel intimidated and unable to attend. In short it has got totally out of hand and it would appear that some outside vested interests have tried to influence the vote. “I have a duty to ensure that all members feel comfortable and safe in attending any and all LTDA meetings and in the current climate I cannot guarantee this. As a result, the Council of Management has decided to temporarily suspend the Central Branch until we can investigate exactly what has gone on, speak to the candidates, and gather evidence from social media and elsewhere to find a resolution to the problem.
“We must ensure that in all LTDA elections candidates must be able to campaign freely.
“All people that vote must be able to do so confident in the fact that they will be able to do so without intimidation and free from any kind of threats or reprisals.”
