On Saturday 23rd June 2018, we celebrated a landmark event with over 250 guests at our 90th Anniversary Dinner & Dance. The evening began with a welcome speech from Michael Son BEM, the Honorary Chairman of the charity who offered his sincere thanks to everyone who was in attendance on the night for their support and generosity. Next up, a speech from Guest of Honour Howard Reed representing The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers Alias Wire Workers.Committee members Michael Son BEM and Malcolm Shaffron then presented Stuart Woods, CEO of Coram’s Fields, with a cheque for £18,902 for the redevelopment of their nursery outdoor play area. The donation will pay for the resurfacing of the play area and the purchase of new educational play equipment to support the children attending the nursery.
We had many special guests in attendance on the night, the Pearly Kings & Queens, Katie Simmonds from the Russell Square Cabmen’s Shelter, FunkyIce who kindly provided us with a fantastic ice sculpture and Matthew Buckley who provided the magic. The New Foundations got everyone up dancing with their wonderful repertoire of Motown, Rock and Blues classics.
We are grateful for the amazing raffle prizes which were kindly donated to us and on the night we raised over £2,200. Congratulations to all the winners! There are exciting times ahead for us as we look forward to our next fundraising day on Friday 29th June at the Russell Square Cabmen's Shelter, the official opening of the refurbished Coram's Fields nursery and our annual outing to Southend-on-Sea, both taking place in July. Then we start on our rebrand with Pentagram which will be rolled out over the next 6 months. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported our charity over the last 90 years. Without you, we would not be where we are today. We look forward to the next 90 years. To find out more about the LTFUC please visit www.ltfuc.org.uk

More cities announce congestion charges in fight against diesel

More cities announce congestion charges in fight against diesel

In January of this year, the UK Government was issued a ‘final warning’ from the European Commission about the poor levels of air quality – it was found that there were repeated breaches of the limits in 16 different areas, with Birmingham and Leeds consistently among the worst areas. The fines for such breaches could total in the region of £60 million.

As a response to that, there are plans for two new congestion charging schemes to come into force on the 1st January 2020, which could see some vehicles paying as much as £100 per day to enter the city centres.

Clean air zones

Both Birmingham and Leeds city councils are looking to introduce schemes similar to London’s ULEZ (Ultra-Low Emission Zones) in a bid to tackling the ‘crisis-level’ air pollution found in the cities. Only vehicles that meet Euro 4 for unleaded (generally manufactured after 2006) or Euro 6 for diesel (2015 onwards) would be exempt from the charge, although it’s thought that Leeds will only target the commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses and HGVs, whereas Birmingham will look to the private motorist also.

A spokesman for Birmingham City Council stated that the charge wasn’t about making money, that all surplus would go back into the city’s transport budget, and that this was purely as a measure to tackling city-wide pollution levels. The charge will cover every single road within the city centre, aside from the A4540 middle ring road; a perfect way to create a congestion zone.

Birmingham council’s own analysis into air quality found that the high pollution levels were responsible for shortening the lives of at least 900 residents.

A different route for Leeds

Leeds City Council will also be introducing a congestion charge, but amidst the plans, they have also stated that their end goal is to make the air breathable (rather than financial gain), so they’ll be looking to support businesses running HGVs or coaches with grants of up to £19,000 to retrofit emission reducing tech, equally, taxi drivers will be eligible for funding of up to £3,000 to help them swap over to electric or hybrid power.

Further still, the initial plan to charge £100 per day for the most polluting vehicles has been halved to just £50, and the restricted zone has also been reduced – this seems a genuine plan to try and address the issue of air quality, rather than penalise the motorist – they won’t be charging private motorists to enter the city.

There’s also talk of alternative measures such as ‘no idling’ zones outside schools and having car-free days within the city centre.

The bigger picture

Whilst the plans still need to be approved by Parliament, you’d say it was a rather safe bet that this will be happening on the proposed date in January 2020, and the question is – will this be extended to other areas?

Birmingham council runs under the West Midlands Combined Authority, which also controls Coventry, surely the next step is to roll the plan out to the extended reaches of the authority? Just as London is widening their ULEZ zone for 2021, taking in all of inner London, Birmingham will look to incorporate the surrounding cities as part of the ‘tackling pollution’ strategy.

Coventry City Council are under heavy criticism for the treatment of motorists as it is, with official bodies such as the Traffic Penalty Tribunal branding them “delusional, reminiscent of King Canute” in respect to parking restrictions, which have earned the council over £1.5 million. Will this be the Golden Egg for the council?

What about you?

Although still over a year away, the plans to introduce a congestion charging zone, Clean Air Zone, ULEZ, T-Charge or any other form of penalty to the motorist will have a very real effect on many of us. A great deal of families already monitor their spending closely as a result of increasing fuel costs, and paying a further £10 per day to enter a city centre isn’t going to make things easier.

Naturally, being in a city centre means there are good public transport links, but that’s still further cost, and if the taxi/bus/coach companies are adding an extra £100/day to their overhead, that cost will simply be passed on to the consumer, or it will force the taxi drivers out of town.

Adding a congestion charge to enter a city will simply push consumer prices upwards – imagine a small logistics company that has just ten HGVs delivering to a city centre, that’s £1,000/day or £365,000 per year increase in overhead – this is no longer just about the motorist, this is the UKs economy.

Will a £10 charge prohibit people from entering a city centre? What sort of effect do you think this will have on the consumer economy?

Is this just another Tax set lie so people will pay it... like the congestion charge in Central London ???

LEVC electric taxi batteries set to stand the test of time

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2lDLwHp
It’s perfectly normal to have concerns over the reliability and longevity of new technology entering the trade and in particular the drive battery. Although many concerns are based in some truth, rumours are often exaggerated.LEVC, the manufacturers of the new electric TX eCity, were keen to explain just how durable the new technology is.
A spokesperson from LEVC said “From the outset, it was a key design objective to ensure the drive battery would last the life of the taxi, and that required the right expertise. The cutting-edge lithium-ion battery fitted to TX has been developed in conjunction with LG Chem, the world’s largest automotive battery manufacturer.“Although the storage capacity of all batteries will gradually decrease over time (known as ‘ageing’), this effect can be minimised. On-board systems constantly monitor and manage energy usage to protect the battery, such as a cooling system dedicated to keeping the battery at exactly the right temperature whether operating in extreme ambient temperatures, under heavy usage or during rapid charging. In fact, extensive testing has shown that even under the most demanding operating conditions, our drive batteries retain at least 75% of their original charge capacity after 9,000 use cycles – that’s the equivalent of more than half a million miles.”

South Gloucestershire cabbies say wheelchair rule could force them out of business

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2Mwocqp
A new rule forcing all new taxis to be wheelchair accessible have been criticised by South Gloucestershire cabbies, with one company claiming that it could impact on the "street hail."
The cabbies have stated that the new rule is discriminatory and could force cab drivers out of business as prices could be pushed up to mitigate the cost of the new vehicle.
It is also claimed that heavy wheelchairs could cause injury to drivers as well as causing issues for disabled cabbies who cannot manage to manipulate a wheelchair.
There are fears that this could see the end to an already decimated hackney carriage industry in the area.
The new rule applies to all new taxis licensed after April 1st 2019, it does not apply to private hire vehicles.
Cheltenham Borough Council are imposing the strict new rules and regulations on taxi drivers in that many believe will affect taxi users in town. Under their new policies all taxis within the town will have to be wheelchair accessible by 2021. A petition has been created by local taxi driver David Chambers to challenge the council’s decision. Mr Chambers said “This will mean that there will be potentially over 250 wheelchair accessible vehicles. There will be no more freedom of choice for the public.“This new ruling also discriminates against the elderly and mobility impaired who cannot access these vehicles.”

“We hold TfL responsible” for allowing Uber to operate says UCG who look to crowd fund legal action against regulator

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2yKfumt
Yesterday we learned that Uber have been granted a 15-month probationary licence. The UCG always feared and suspected this was the likely outcome. We hold TfL responsible as they have, illegally in our opinion, allowed Uber & Private Hire to ply for hire via apps for the last 6 years. This is something the UCG have vigorously fought TfL and the Metropolitan Police on but have always been fobbed off, stonewalled or challenged to take them to court if we didn’t like it.In recent months the UCG committee took the decision that the trade needed a contingency plan, we met with a prominent QC who having considered the evidence believes we have a strong and solid case against TfL on a number of issues including, but not limited, to our fundamental right to ply for hire.We also took the decision to meet with a number of stakeholders who were very supportive and have subsequently generously pledged a significant amount of money to get the legal challenge up and running. As we all know legal challenges do not come cheap and unfortunately the UCG are not in a position to fully fund a legal challenge, however we have been contacted by many of our members saying they would happily donate to a trade funded legal challenge if it were to get TfL into the dock. Therefore, we are delighted to announce that we will be launching a crowd funding exercise to raise the required funds to take TfL to court. This will be a monumental task and it is not a decision we’ve taken lightly, however, we believe we have no alternative and the time is now for the entire trade to back this innovative and hold the real guilty party TfL to account. We should be in receipt of our QC’s legal opinion shortly and we will pass this and information of how to get involved on to our members and the rest of the trade in due course, we hope that you will support this action as best you can and spread the word to your colleagues, friends and family.

But Be Honest, What Else Did You Expect From Uber, The Tories And TfL After Waiting And Seeing???

A SAD DAY FOR THE BRITISH LEGAL SYSTEM

Robert Cardwell:
I have to ask all @TheLTDA members "have you not asked your org how come they didn’t know about the connection between the Tory’s and yesterday’s Magistrate the fact that she’s married to a Tory MP? How can an org as switched on as @TheLTDA miss something as important as that ???"

The Taxi trade has always had a football supporter type mentality...if we were a football team, would it be time to sack a clueless manager and get a new one???

Unite's Cab Section Glasgow said today...
The impartiality of the legal system in the UK took another blow today. Emma Arbuthnot gave Uber it’s London licence back this aft. She is married to Tory MP, James Arbuthnot. He was made a life peer by David Cameron in 2015. David Cameron warned Boris to back off Uber when PM.

TAXI LEAKS EXTRA BIT :

So Uber admits 2million illegal journeys a week for six years with 2,500 drivers under investigation for various crimes, 154 sexual assaults last year including 48 UberRapes, 3 alleged terrorist attacks from Uber drivers, the hacking of customer accounts, spying on customers even after they've left the car (GreyBall), 13,000 fake CBR checks, thousands of fake medicals, operating from unlicensed premises etc...what ever happened to Khan’s promise of one hit and they’re out?

Sadiq Khan tweeted:

Uber has been granted a 15 month licence to operate in London by Westminster Magistrates Court with a clear set of conditions. Uber remains strictly on probation, and @TfL will monitor it closely. No matter how big or powerful you are, you must play by the rules.

All they had to do was say sorry and TfL give them a 15 month licence.

Does that mean that if Warboys and Perry say sorry they can have their Taxi licenses back???

Was the Uber appeal a big battle or a minor skirmish?

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2Mq8BbQ
Ok, so Uber won its appeal against TfL refusing to renew its license, so what has changed from the day before the court case?......nothing, nada, nicht, not a flaming sausage.
The taxi industry is still in the Red corner and the PHV industry are still in the Blue corner, with Uber still studying their sat-nav, trying to find which arena we are fighting in.
Let's not forget, it wasn't the taxi industry taking Uber to court, it wasn't TfL taking Uber to court.....it was Uber taking TfL to court, whilst the taxi industry was merely an interested party.
Whatever has gone on in the past regarding TfLs involvment in what can only be described as a scandal, involving Uber, it's pretty clear that they are trying to remedy the situation, albeit a little late.
From the varying accounts over social media Helen Chapman was most certainly no shrinking violet in the courtroom, going toe-to-toe and blow-for-blow with Uber's QC.
Uber's 15 month license really is the "last chance saloon" for them, one false move and they could be in serious trouble.
Let's not forget, had Uber lost this appeal, it's a racing certainty that they would have appealed to a higher court. This could potentially have dragged out the whole process for many more months, possibly years, before any conclusion.
Uber's license being renewed is not the fault of TfL, the LTDA or any other entity, this was solely down to the British legal system.A decision could only be made on current and future conduct, not past indiscretions, which is surprising given that Uber were deemed not fit and proper based on past indiscretions.Let's be clear, this does not finish the taxi industry, not even close. Uber still have a VAT battle and an employment tribunal to deal with, both potentially more damaging than having their license in London revoked.Had Uber lost their appeal, they would have continued operating via the murky world of cross-border hiring, the status-quo would have still remained....and still does.Uber remain the darlings of the millennials and those on very low pay, but these are men and women who would never usually set foot in a taxi, prior to Ubers arrival they would use their local minicab firm.It is true that Uber has damaged the licensed taxi industry, but it has also decimated the PHV industry and is slowly crippling the bus network, which has a massive financial Black hole. The taxi industry's battle-lines are not straight forward, the guns are perpetually aiming at the wrong targets like a wayward machine-gun. The industry's problems lay firmly at the door of Government, more specifically the secretary of state for transport.Add into the mix the taxi industry's public image, something that has never really been grabbed by the throat and shaken up, and also how The Knowledge is marketed, the industry does have problems......but none of this is insurmountable, its a sharp learning curve. In this modern era the industry needs to be more sophisticated in how it operates and portrays itself.Uber ? They are a sideshow, a distraction at best, they are a symptom of the taxi industry's problems. The taxi industry has spent six years with Uber perpetually punching away with blow after blow, and yet the taxi industry is still here, standing, bloodied....yes, beaten.....no!As we stand at the moment Uber could have a lot more problems than the licensed taxi industry.Nil desperandum.
