Uber pass ten billion bumpy worldwide rides milestone

Controversial ride-hailing app Uber have completed 10 billion worldwide trips despite a bumpy ride along the way. On Sunday, June 10, 173 trips and deliveries started simultaneously at 10:12pm, giving the global minicab firm over 10 billion completed trips. These trips happened in more than 21 countries across five continents, in cities like Montreal, Mexico City and Miami. Latin America took the top spot for most simultaneous trips on a continent according to Uber. Since Uber’s beginning back in 2010 there has been a host of challenges ranging from allegations of toxic internal working culture, “greyballing” of regulators and covered up data hacks. Currently, in the UK alone, issues surrounding workers rights, VAT tax payments and the impending £1.25bn taxi driver class action for loss of earnings means that Uber still has sizeable future challenges to become a globally and locally profitable company.

London Taxi Trade Needs To Act Now, If We Are Not To Become Slaves To The App...by Lenny Etheridge.
(The post above states "Drivers Today Protesting On London Bridge"... Picture is of course 'Tower' Bridge, typical Uber....pesky satnavs).
The significant problem with 'unregulated' apps is they will eventually dictate all work.
When a minicab driver applies to an office for work, the office may stipulate "We only have vacancies for day men." - dictating when you work.
They might 'let you go' if you don't cover enough work for them.
They might discriminate against a driver who doesn't do enough jobs that are not financially viable.
A minicab office 'employed' drivers who covered work.
And drivers worked for minicab offices that provided plenty of work.
A traditional minicab proprietor balanced the amount of drivers against the amount of work available.
He 'capped' his workforce.
Uber have changed all the rules
Uber does the opposite of capping.
It floods the market with drivers, as it has in London where it has saturated the Private Hire industry.
So Uber's 40k drivers have to scavenge over work which can only feed at most 15k.
We must make sure ALL apps (including Taxi apps) are regulated, if we don't want to become glorified Uber whores!
A few years ago Hailo made the statement that their biggest enemy was the street hail.
Note: UPHD stands for United Private Hire Drivers.
Who can forget Uber's last protest to TfL, where 250,000 (unverified) signatures, were delivered to the wronge building by protesting Uber drivers.

Cabbie hailed a hero after taking care of Alzheimer's sufferer

A Londonderry taxi driver has been hailed a hero after helping a disorientated Alzheimer's sufferer.
The elderly woman was picked up by the cabbie in Derry city centre, however, the cabbie soon established that the woman had a serious problem with dementia, after he was unable to ascertain her destination or home details.
The driver subsequently contacted the police, who upon arrival then established that the woman had been put into the taxi by a shopworker who didn't know what to do with the lady.
One of the police officers described the unamed cabbie as a hero, after the driver took the lady to several addresses in town, and despite failing to find her home, stayed with her and looked after her.
The police and the taxi driver eventually found the lady's daughter's contact details and contacted her.
The taxi driver then drove the lady to sunday lunch.
The cabbie also received praise from Bernadine McCrory, the Northern Ireland director of the Alzheimer's Society.

Minicab drivers set to protest at City Hall to demand end to exploitation and institutional racism

Minicab drivers from London will be protesting at City Hall later this morning when the Transport for London non executive board is due to meet with the Mayor. This is the latest in a series of protests by the United Private Hire Drivers branch of the IWGB union as they aim to highlight the urgent need for the regulator to eradicate 'sweated labour' conditions in the publicly licensed trade.Drivers are demanding:Worker Rights. The union claims the Mayor must do more to make worker rights a condition of licensing for firms like Uber and Addison Lee and demand these and other firms obey all UK employment law. Uber and Addison Lee have both been found to be in violation of employment law by two separate Employment Tribunals.A fairer regulatory cost burden. The UPHD wants the Mayor to reduce the cost and regulatory burden on precarious workers and make licensed operator firms like Uber and Addison Lee pay their fair share. Recently, Transport for London announced a plan to make minicab drivers pay the congestion charge costing drivers an estimated £250 per month. This would mean an average Uber driver would need to work an extra 12 hours per week just to cover the extra costs. Trade union representation. The London Mayor has also been pushed by the union to instruct Transport for London to end discrimination which denies 114,000 mostly BME minicab drivers dedicated trade union representation while 23,000 mostly white British black cab drivers have the choice of five separate trade representative bodies. The UPHD also demand that far right influences within the current permitted stakeholder group be removed. Action against attacks on minicab drivers.According to a survey conducted by the UPHD 55% of minicab drivers have been assaulted while working and 83% have been victims of hate crime. TfL are being urged to act together with the police to make sure private hire drivers are kept safe at work.A spokesperson for the union accuses TfL of being institutionally racist due to a lack of regard for exploitation and violence against a group of mostly BME workers together with their decision to place an unfair cost & regulatory burden on minicab drivers while denying them right of representation.
Yaseen Aslam, Secretary of United Private Hire Drivers branch of the IWGB union and co lead claimant in Aslam & Farrar v Uber said:"It is time for the Mayor to stand up for precarious workers and to eradicate sweatshop conditions from the licensed trade in the capital once and for all. The Mayor must also bring an end the scourge of institutional racism at Transport for London."

One of the largest Volvo Car dealer groups in the UK has today announced that it will also be operating an electric taxi franchise. Endeavour Automotive have operated a number of Volvo dealerships in and around London since 2014 and from the start of August will also be selling LEVC’s TX from Chiswick With the TX, LEVC has completely redesigned the taxi with the customer in mind, it offers passengers a premium experience in an electrically driven vehicle. On-board wi-fi, phone and laptop charging are all included, effectively making the new taxi a mobile office for passengers. In addition, the more spacious and comfortable space includes six seats and class-leading wheelchair accessibility. Endeavour Automotive decided to become a franchise holder after seeing the popularity of the new taxi with passengers and drivers, as well as the level of support from both national and city government for the electric taxi project. The team have invested to increase the capacity of their workshop to support the arrival of a new brand. More importantly, for West London drivers, the firm is also building a number of taxi dedicated fast charge points to give cabbies greater access to charging in West London. These will supplement the 52 dedicated rapid chargers which are set aside for taxi use in London. These chargepoints can be found on street and in 5 Q-parks across London, including China Town, Harley Street, Pimlico, Oxford Street and Knightsbridge.
Adrian Wallington, Managing Director Endeavour Automotive said: “The extension of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone and arrival of electric taxis are measures that will significantly improve air quality in West London, and alongside a significant increase in demand for more environmentally friendly passenger vehicles in the capital, we’re delighted to be part of this taxi revolution, especially as the new TX can offer savings of up to £100 per week in fuel for the average London taxi driver. Chris Gubbey, CEO of LEVC said: “Our purpose-built, passenger focused taxi, has been designed with the intention of getting more people in the back of cabs – offering the safest, cleanest, quietest and smoothest taxi ride yet. We are delighted to have had the support of the team at Endeavour to deliver this vision for the taxi trade in London.”
