Ofgem supports need for higher peak time electric vehicle charging fees to help meet demand

Ofgem has set out proposals to help support the expected huge numbers of electric vehicles and taxis set for Britain’s roads in the coming decades in a bid to keep costs down for drivers and all energy consumers.
The energy watchdog suggests a more flexible use of the energy system will allow more electric vehicles to be charged from the existing grid and reduce the need for expensive new power stations and extra grid capacity to be built. The energy system is undergoing a radical transformation thanks to such new technologies while more electricity is coming from intermittent renewable sources. According to Ofgem analysis published today if owners use ‘flexible’ charging - where they only top up outside peak demand times on the grid – at least 60% more EVs could be charged up compared with ‘inflexible’ charging where electric vehicles are only charged at peak times.*Flexible charging does this by allowing electric vehicles to be charged when energy prices are cheapest, for example when wind and solar power is generating lots of electricity or when there is less demand across the system.Flexible charging also helps to keep energy costs down for all consumers as technology allows stored electricity from electric vehicle batteries to be sent back onto the grid when it is needed. Ofgem’s proposed reforms will give incentives for customers to charge their electric vehicles at the right time. The reforms will free up existing grid capacity to allow new generators, including businesses or other organisations which want to generate their own power on-site, to get connected to the grid more quickly. The reforms would make the electricity system more efficient by giving generators and other users more choice and flexibility on how they connect to the grid.Jonathan Brearley, executive director, systems and networks, Ofgem, said: “Ofgem is working with the government to support the electric vehicle revolution in Britain which can bring big benefits to consumers. Our reforms will help more users charge their electric vehicles and save them money. “The proposals we have announced today will also harness the benefits of electric vehicles and other new technologies to help manage the energy system and keep costs down for all consumers. “The way we generate, transport and use electricity – and power our cars - is undergoing a radical transformation in Great Britain.“Ofgem will ensure that the energy system is fit for this exciting, cleaner future and at the lowest cost for consumers.”

Taxi drivers in Bodrum, Turkey have brought part of the popular holiday resort to a standstill, after a cabbie was arrested for attacking an Uber driver.
According to Hurriyet Daily News as many as 800 cabbies blockaded the road between Bodrum and Milas.
The incident between the taxi driver and the Uber driver, which took place on July 25th and sparked the subsequent protest took place in the Yalikavak district of Bodrum.
The blockade was eventually lifted after 45 minutes, when Bodrum Chamber of Drivers chair Hasan Kablı spoke to angry drivers, and persuaded them that blocking the road was not a solition to the problems surrounding Uber.
On June 1st, Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan effectively ended Uber's operation in Turkey, although despite being all but driven out of Istanbul, they are still operating in some holiday resorts, with around 1000 still operating in Bodrum.

Spanish taxi drivers descended on Barcelona on Wednesday 25, in protest against the rising number of drivers operating under ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Cabify. Taxi drivers from all over Spain demonstrated their frustrations with the decision to suspend additional authorisation required for ride-hailing companies to operate in Barcelona, an agreement that would of seen a ratio of 30 taxi licenses for every authorised ride-hailing car. With the suspension of the agreement, the current ratio of taxi drivers to ride-hailing drivers is 6.7 to 1, which is likely to shorten if the agreement is not honoured. Thousands of demonstrators protested in front of the Arch of Triumph, lighting firecrackers and honking their horns. Drivers demand more to be done in the way of regulating ride-hailing apps which they say are taking away their living. According to a report in the Washington Post, Uber and Cabify have temporarily suspended services in Barcelona due to the protests which have seen some of their drivers being attacked. Cars were left with broken windows and wing mirrors, while two men were taken to hospital with injuries.

Ford have announced this week that they will be creating a separate division to focus on it's self-driving range as they look to compete with the likes of Waymo and Uber in the race for fully autonomous vehicles. The set up will see the new division, Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLP, operate as an independent self-driving unit which will open it up to outside investment. According to Business Insider, Ford confirmed that the new company will be structured to take on third party investment as a way to keep up with its competitors. Arguably the leaders in the autonomous car world is Alphabet's Waymo unit, who's valuation has been estimated to be north of £37 billion. Waymo are looking to launch a commercial ride-hailing service in the very near future. It's been confirmed via a tweet by Waymo CEO John Krafcik that Their vehicles are now covering 25,000 autonomous miles per day, making their total miles driven, a whopping 8 million.
In addition to road miles being covered, Krafcik confirmed that Waymo has covered 5 billion miles in simulation. In a Daily Mail report, it was also announced this week that Uber will begin the first road tests for it's autonomous range since the fatal collision that saw a female pedestrian killed after one of its self-driving vehicles failed to stop as she crossed the road. Uber will relaunch testing in "manual mode" which means a human operator will be behind the wheel navigating at all times. The manual mode will allow Uber to gather data and to develop more accurate mapping for the vehicles.
