New York City cabbies stay strong as mayor rejects ride-hailing trio’s $100m bail out

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2v7QlOg
The mayor and city councillors in New York City have rejected a proposed $100 million fund from ride-hailing apps Uber, Lyft and Via to help struggling taxi drivers.
The offer comes from the app based trio as they look to beat new regulation put in place by the mayor which includes the capping in numbers of vehicles such as Uber. The $100 million hardship fund, spread over five years, is being offered in return for a lift in the cap.
City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office have rejected the offer as they act to assist the struggling taxi industry, which has seen six suicides in as many months.
The cap, which is designed to curtail ride-hailing apps, such as Uber and Lyft, will initially last for twelve months. This isn't the first time an attempt to stem the relentless flow of Uber and Lyft vehicles has been proposed. In 2015 an unsuccessful attempt at a similar proposal was thwarted.
Both Uber and Lyft are keen to negotiate on the cap and claim it would send waiting times sky high and drive down driver earnings. They also pinpoint the cap may have an affect on the coverage to outer borough residents, which includes low-income groups.
Joe Okpaku, Lyft’s vice president for public policy, told The Verge “The cap bill would set things back to a time when service levels were horrible in the outer boroughs,”

Defibrillators given to London Taxi drivers for first response life saving scheme

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2v94Pxd
A new trial will see some of London's iconic black taxi drivers trained in basic life-saving techniques and taught how to use potentially life-saving electronic devices such as defibrillators. The new initiative set up by London Ambulance Service will alert the trained taxi drivers of a nearby emergency through an app called GoodSAM. The drivers will then hopefully be able to administer first aid which could include the use of a defibrillator. According to a report in the Evening Standard, survival rates increase from below 10 percent to more than 50 percent when trained "good samaritans" use defibrillators. Thirty London cabbies are involved in the trial which will last six months, with 15 of them being given defibrillators to carry with them in their vehicles. The initiative to use London's iconic taxi drivers, who some call "London's forth emergency service" , was suggested by the LTDA (London Taxi Drivers Association). If the trial is successful we could see many more London taxi drivers undergoing first aid training to assist Londoners in their moment of need.

Previously convicted Private hire driver prosecuted for touting on multiple occasions

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2n5yWRL
A private hire driver has been successfully prosecuted after an undercover operation in Milton Keynes found him to be touting (illegally plying for hire) on two separate occasions during the same evening. Yasir Mahmood of Luton, was found guilty after denying the charges of plying for hire and driving without valid motor insurance on two separate occasions. Mahmood, who has a private hire licence with South Northants Council, picked up Taxi Licensing Officers who were acting as members of the public in Milton Keynes in October 2017. Mahmood' licence only allows him to pick up pre-booked jobs. Further investigations found that Mahmood did not have valid insurance. According to a report in Milton Keynes Citizen, Mahmood was previously prosecuted by Milton Keynes Council for the same offences back in 2010 but was allowed to keep his licence but with the addition of penalty points. Mahmood was fined £100 for each conviction of plying for hire and £200 for each invalid insurance conviction. He has also been disqualified from driving for four months and pay additional costs of £680. Taxi Licensing Officers will continue to crack down on anyone illegally plying for hire in Milton Keynes.

More Complaints From Uber Drivers About Low Wages, In The Face Of Uber’s Anti Slavery Pledge

Uber drivers say their take-home pay is being cut as the taxi industry disruptor responds to pressure from new entrants in the increasingly crowded "ride-share" market.

The Silicon Valley giant introduced "upfront pricing", which gives passengers the exact cost of their ride ahead of the journey, and launched a service called UberPool, which allows passengers travelling in the same direction to share a ride for a discounted rate.

Uber says the two initiatives are intended to grow its user numbers, which will help its "driver partners" to be successful.

But drivers said the result has been they take home less pay for doing the same amount of work and have announced a two hour strike on Monday morning as part of the push for better conditions.

"Rates are already too low and unsustainable, leaving drivers with very little profit and well below minimum wage take-home pay," said Max B, an Uber driver who runs the advocacy group RideShare Drivers United.

"Now they have this to boot, a system that exploits them even more."

The group is calling for drivers to log-off the Uber system en masse from 7am until 9.30am on Monday, August 6.

Max B, who would not reveal his last name for fear of being "deactivated" by Uber, told Fairfax Media the shift to "upfront fares" saw drivers’ pay rates drop between 10 to 30 per cent, while drivers were losing up to 40 per cent on UberPOOL trips.

Like a traditional taxi meter, Uber now calculates the fare based on the trip’s distance, and time taken, but with current traffic conditions it’s almost impossible to give an exact estimate especially with the uncertainty of the Sat-Nav rout taken. It also crunches data from past trips but rarely gives an estimate anywhere near the final cost.

Mass shooting Uber driver looks to suppress statements in court

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2LV77tB
An Uber driver who went on a mass shooting spree in 2016 is to have his statements to police supressed in court.Jason Dalton is standing trial for the killing of six people, Tyler Smith, Rich Smith, Mary Jo Nye, Mary Lou Nye, Judy Brown and Barbara Hawthorne in Kalamazoo, USAHe is also accused of injuring Tiana Carruthers and Abigail Kopf in the same incident, which took place on February 20th 2016. At Michigan Court of Appeals, Dalton's lawyer had argued that because Dalton had repeatedly invoked his right to remain silent and also repeatedly requested an attorney, any statements Dalton had made to police should be suppressed. The prosecutions counter-arguement centred around the fact that because police were acting under an emergency, a public safety exception to the Dalton's Miranda Rights ensued. This was so as to be able to determine the extent of the crimes which had been perpetuated, therefore any statements which Dalton had made would admissible. The appeal, which was heard on the 10th July 2017 by a three judge panel decided in the defences favour. The prosecution is currently reviewing the courts decision and its own legal position surrounding the case.Dalton failed in an attempt to plead insanity, and was deemed fit enough to stand trial.
