Electro-magnetic radiation health concerns surrounding the electric taxi put to bed

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2P8Csb3
Electromagnetic radiation is all around us, generated by electricity cables, radio and television signals, microwave ovens and mobile phones to name just a few.
Like any product, all new vehicles have to meet strict regulations around radiation levels in order to be sold in Europe. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) oversee these tests in the UK and the LEVC TX cab passed more than comfortably. In fact, to reassure drivers who spend long hours behind the wheel, the TX has also been independently tested against the guidelines set out by the recognised experts in this field, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). These stringent guidelines are aimed at ensuring protection of users against all adverse health effects as a result of occupational (i.e. frequent long-term) exposure to electric and magnetic fields.
These tests were carried out in a special enclosure. The vehicle is driven on a 'rolling road' at 25mph while radiation of different types is measured in more than 60 areas inside the vehicle. The highest recorded reading was just 8.5% of the safe limit prescribed by the guidelines, recorded on the passenger compartment floor area, with the highest measurement inside the driver's compartment only 2.6%.
An LEVC spokesperson said “While electro-magnetic radiation poses no health risk to TX drivers, passengers or other road users, poor air quality has a significant impact – which is why we have developed eCity technology and made the transition to a zero emissions capable taxi.”

Montreal cabbies to be compensated $250m for loses due to Uber

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2Bd9HqR
Montreal taxi drivers are set for a $250m windfall from the government to compensate the loses made on their taxi permit values.Cabbies in the Canadian city have long fought Uber and other ride-hailing by means of protests and court hearings but like other cities Uber remain active in their city. The provincial government of Quebec are to announce on Friday a package to compensate taxi drivers to help businesses suffering because of the ride-hailing giants. It has been reported by MTLblog that the money made available will reach $250 million in public funds. It is said that drivers will receive the money in compensation for the drop in value of taxi permits. Values dropped from hundreds of thousands of dollars to a staggering few tens of thousands. According to CNC, George Boussios, spokesperson for Taxis du Grand Montréal, an association of Montreal taxi companies said: “$30,000 is a drop in the bucket for what's happened in the last four years when the value of a permit was about $200,000 and now they're selling for about $80,000,"It is also said that just $44 million will go towards improving the Taxi service in Montreal. That figure has sparked local controversy with some members of the public questioning the need for government intervention at all in a “free market”.

It provides the basics you would expect from a modern app, such an invoicing and receipting system. We’re keen to talk to drivers with electric vehicles, or those who wish to drive electric vehicles, we are completely committed to an Elite electric fleet. That’s our vision for the long term and we need professional like-minded drivers to help us achieve this goal.”

Man with previous conviction of sexual assault allowed to continue operating as a Private Hire Driver

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2OBT0XN
A man who was convicted of indecent assault on a female under the age of 14 has been told he can continue operating as a private hire driver by Sandwell council. The man, only known as 'Mr S G' was convicted of the sexual offence in 1999 and served three months in jail. Despite guidelines that recommend anyone with previous sexual offences be barred from ever holding a private hire licence, Sandwell council decided to allow Mr S G to continue, stating their decision was based on his good driving record and good character. Minutes from the licensing sub committee meeting which took place last month were made public, with council members saying "each case is reviewed on its own merits". Any details that would identify the man in question were excluded from the public release. Sandwell Council said they were aware of Mr S G's conviction of sexual assault when he first applied for his licence back in 2007. The committee decided that he was a "fit and proper" candidate to hold a private hire licence. According to a report in the BBC, the decision has been criticised by the chairman of the West Midlands Private Hire Drivers Association, Rachel Shah who says no one with a conviction of sexual assault should ever be issued a licensed.

Uber Driver Was Accused of Sexual Assault, But Not Fired. Then It Happened Again, Lawsuit Says.

Amber* and her friends spent a hot and humid July 2017 evening in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at The Pickle Barrel, a pub in a flatiron building with southern bites and a crowded roof deck.

As she had many nights before, Amber called an Uber for her and a friend to make the more than eight-mile trip home at about 1:30 a.m. But unlike those other nights, on July 22, 2017, Amber says she was sexually assaulted by her driver before she made it to her own front door.

Though Amber immediately reported her assault to both Uber and the authorities, another woman says she was victimized by that same driver just 15 days later.

Now, the women want answers.

Both unidentified plaintiffs filed a 65-page lawsuit against Uber last month in Hamilton County, Tennessee. The complaint was first covered by The Chattanoogan, and it claims the company was negligent in its retention of the alleged perpetrator, 26-year-old John Kyle Lane, after the first incident. The women are seeking at least $25,000 in damages to be determined at trial.

Lane began his ride with Amber by "offering details of his personal life that [she] found to be inappropriate," according to the complaint. After dropping off Amber’s friend, Lane arrived at her home, pulled into the driveway, and positioned his vehicle "such that he was between [her] and her house," the lawsuit claims.

Then, he allegedly locked the doors. Lane asked Amber how she felt about uncircumcised penises and then forced his genitals into her hand while groping her breast, according to both the lawsuit and police documents obtained by The Tennessean.

When Amber threatened to scream and jerked her hand away, Lane allegedly unlocked the door and let her out. As he sped away, Amber ran into her house and called the Red Bank Police Department and notified Uber, according to the lawsuit.

"This driver should be fired. I find him to be a danger to his passengers," Amber allegedly wrote at the end of her complaint to the company.

An Uber representative purportedly sent her an email shortly afterward, noting that the company had launched an internal investigation and that someone would be in touch with her as soon as possible. A phone call later that day from another representative confirmed the investigation, the lawsuit claims.

Uber refunded Amber’s money for the ride and placed a restriction on her profile so that she would never be paired with Lane again, according to the complaint.

Afterward, she was traumatized, had nightmares, and had difficulty sleeping, according to the lawsuit.

"The trauma of this event became embedded in her mind to the point where it often infiltrated her every thought, impeded her ability to carry out her daily activities and infected her relationship with her husband and young daughter," the complaint claims. She "suffered severe emotional distress and was forced to enter counseling and seek psychiatric treatment," the court papers say.

Meanwhile, Lane was still driving customers. On Aug. 6, 2017, he picked up Julia*.

She was trying to get home from downtown Chattanooga and, again, Lane struck up an "inappropriate" conversation and eventually asked if he could "come inside and ‘have a threesome’" with Julia and her boyfriend, court documents allege.

When she moved to get out of the car, Lane yelled and allegedly exposed his erect penis.

"You’re not going anywhere until you do something about this," he said, according to the complaint. She frantically left the vehicle and ran to the back of her house.

That evening, Julia reported the incident to the East Ridge Police Department and to Uber, which allegedly took six days to respond to her report, the complaint claims. The ride-hail giant said it would restrict Lane’s driver access and investigate the situation. A few days later, Julia allegedly received another message from the company, claiming that Lane’s account was put on hold until an investigation could be completed. She was also told that she would not be paired with Lane again.

After receiving another Aug. 14, 2017 email from Uber, Julia wrote: "I very much appreciate that I will not be paired with this Uber driver, but my concern is that another girl will end up with this individual and something worse will happen to her…. I have been a member of this community long before Uber came to our city and I feel a certain responsibility to the other women I live alongside."

Lane has been charged in Hamilton County with stalking, harassment, sexual battery and indecent exposure, according to The Tennessean. He is scheduled for a court hearing on Aug. 14 and 15, the newspaper reports.

Lane began driving for Uber in spring 2017, according to the lawsuit, which claims the company "failed to exercise reasonable care in retaining Lane and continuing to allow him to drive its customers."

In a statement sent to The Daily Beast on Monday night, an Uber spokeswoman said: "What’s been described is appalling and this driver remains permanently removed from the app."

Another suit against Uber, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, first alleged in November 2017 that the ride-hail giant operates a system that enables perpetrators to have access to thousands of victims all over the country.

One driver is even accused of masturbating in the presence of a customer, explaining: "I thought this is what you wanted." The nine plaintiffs have each claimed that they were sexually assaulted, harassed, or kidnapped by their Uber driver.

"Uber has done everything possible to continue using low-cost, woefully inadequate background checks on drivers and has failed to monitor drivers for any violent or inappropriate conduct after they are hired," that lawsuit, amended in March, says. "Uber has created a system for bad actors to gain access to vulnerable victims."

Attorney Jeanne Christensen, who represents those plaintiffs, told The Daily Beast in March that "Uber’s goal is to stop women from getting the justice they deserve through our court system."

An April investigation by CNN found 103 reports of sexual assault by Uber drivers within the past four years.

An Uber spokesperson told CNN then that safety is the company’s top priority this year, pointing out numerous recent protocol updates, including more background checks, in addition to a "safety center" on the app. Another Uber spokesperson said in March that the company takes all sexual-misconduct allegations against its drivers "very seriously."

*Pseudonyms were given to the unidentified victims in these lawsuits.

Ride-hailing vomit fraud is leaving passengers feeling sick

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2P9osxB
We have all had drunk punters in the back of the cab. You often think better of it, but being an old softy I find it hard reject anyone, mainly because in this dangerous world I wouldn’t want anyone to come to harm or get lost and end up sleeping on the street. I have kids of my own. You wouldn’t want someone to do reject them because they looked a bit worse for wear.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t always pay, and I have regretted being so easy going when it appears that I have the woman from the Exorcist in my cab, head spinning and spraying green gunk all over the place.
When this happens, as you will know, we can ask for a clean-up fee. Sometimes I have and sometimes I haven’t. It depends on the situation. Although, it’s been £40 for a while now (which hardly covers being out of action for a day, or night) so if anyone from TfL is reading this, it might be time to increase that somewhat.
One thing I have never done is make up a false claim or try to rip someone off by over-charging.
This sort of thing seems to be becoming common-place among Uber drivers from what I can understand.
One of the perks of using the app, so I’m told, is that it’s all payment without cash, with users putting their card details into the system and the money being taken automatically. This so-called perk is one that is open to abuse. Unfortunately, the system relies on trust. Drivers must end the journey by marking it as completed but sometimes it seems they “forget” to do this, while driving around and around the M25 in a daze, “accidentally” racking up a huge bill which the poor, unfortunate rider usually discovers in the morning mid hangover.
A newer scam seems to be the staging of fake mess to justify charging a clean up fee, which is only later discovered by the passenger.
So, called “vomit fraud” sees drivers create fake sick stains and taking pictures as proof before reporting it to their paymasters at Uber.
People all over the world have been highlighting this issue after waking up to find Uber has helped itself to whopping cleaning fee while they were in the land of nod.
People who object to the charge are usually told that the driver has sent photos as proof – although claims these are often faked are now rife.
Ellouise Dennis, from London, complained recently she was hit by a fake “cleaning charge.” Writing on Facebook she said: “Myself and two friends had a nine-minute Uber trip and were all dropped off at our houses successfully without any issues.
“In the morning my payment was increased as a cleaning charge was added of £110 and was taken straight out of my account! We had no food or drink on us and made no mess whatsoever.
“The picture evidence they sent me was nothing to do with my journey.
“When reading into this on Twitter and local newspapers, I’ve found that some Uber drivers are making a mess deliberately and blaming it on their last passengers of the night.
“When I complained about this, Uber didn’t take my side at all and provided a generic response saying, ‘we appreciate your understanding’.
“It wasn’t until I tweeted them for everyone to see, that they started taking it seriously and said they will be refunding me.”
Some might say these people deserve it, although not me. You have to wonder if they learned their lesson though. You also have to marvel at Uber’s way with words in these situations. Passengers get a notification from the firm saying that an “adjustment” had to me made to their bill for cleaning. Some of these “adjustments” can be an eye-watering £115 - to clean up “significant quantities of body fluids (urine, blood or vomit) in the interior of the vehicle.” Ouch! (That’s £115 TfL readers, not £40.)
But I think Uber’s got it wrong here. They stuck to their usual line. If passengers got an email saying, “Uber has disrupted your wallet and removed £115,” people would have been fine with it. The fact is, I remember the days when buses or trains being disrupted was bad. Not bad good, bad in a sweary annoying kind of way, but I’m told everyone below the age of 30 loves a bit of disruption these days.
