An Australian Uber driver has pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a female passenger after he locked his victim in his vehicle when he was supposed to drop her home. Satveer Singh, 25, sexually assaulted the young lady and then demanded her phone number before he would let her leave the vehicle, according to a report in the Daily Mail. Singh then proceeded to contact his victim the following day via text message. The messages were shown in court as evidence against him. The messages read: ‘Hi, how was last night. I hope everything is good.’ A second message was sent three hours later: ‘I think you forget about me’ The court heard that the victim had been out drinking with friends and ordered an Uber to take her home in September 2017. Judge David Kent said Singh had abused his position of trust between himself and a woman who was vulnerable and alone. Crown prosecutor Michael Connelly told the court that Singh parked his vehicle in a bay near his victim’s home and forced himself on her after locking the doors. Singh proceeded to lift her skirt and sexually assault her. CCTV footage confirmed the location of the vehicle,which had been parked in the bay for 27 minutes. The court heard how the woman was finally allowed to leave the vehicle. She then sat on the ground and cried. She was then approached by a security guard who said she was ‘rocking and sobbing at the same time’. She then told him that she had been raped. Singh, an Indian immigrant, had his student visa cancelled immediately after he was charged. He spent the last year in custody, 300 of those days in an immigration detention centre. Judge Kent sentenced Singh to a three year good behaviour bond, citing the time he’d spent in immigration detention and custody as longer than what he would of been sentenced to.
