Uber driver Fausto Luna, 38, took his own life on September 26, when he jumped in front of a New York City subway train at Manhattan Station, becoming at least the seventh Taxi or ride-sharing driver to die by suicide this year in the city.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance has planned a vigil for Luna as hardship continues to fall on drivers within the industry that has seen "competition" cause a stressful working environment, with many struggling to earn a living.
Steve kenton of Taxipoint reported on the last known suicide when Abdul Saleh was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment.
According to Bhairavi Desai, spokesperson for the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, it is alleged that his suicide was as a direct result of the financial hardship in paying his portion of the lease on his medallion, which he shared with a partner.
