Oxford set for the world’s first ‘pop-up’ electric vehicle charging points

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2knYzMB
The city of Oxford has been awarded £474,000 to become the first city in the world to trial ‘pop-up’ on-street electric vehicle charging points. Residents across Oxford are being encouraged to nominate their street to take part in the project, which will see 20 ‘UEone’ retractable pavement bollards installed on streets with on road, off pavement parking. The scheme will be available to residents who currently have electric vehicles, and those who want to own an electric vehicle.Taxi drivers across the UK will be monitoring the trial as cabbies look for a solution to charging new EV taxis roadside at home. The UEone was developed specifically to provide charging for the 43% of UK households who have on-street parking. The charging points will be app-operated and will retract underground when not in use.Olivier Freeling-Wilkinson, Cofounder at Urban Electric said: “The cheapest, most convenient and grid-friendly way to charge an EV is at home at night, yet up to 85% of households in some urban residential areas cannot do so because they park on-street, acting as a barrier to EV adoption.“By giving certainty of access to a home-based charge point for on-street residential parking zones, the UEone makes it possible for local authorities to enable the 11.3m UK households currently excluded from driving an EV with the ability to do so without spoiling street aesthetics.“By installing an over-supply of charging bollards in a street from day one we are creating an abundance of charging spaces that will give consumers without off-street parking the confidence to switch to an EV”

Black Taxi Ban Leaves TP Icap Staff Fuming

Expenses crackdown at interdealer broker TP Icap:

This time it’s black cabs in the sights of the beancounters.

Because of the Bank Junction Taxi ban, resulting in higher fares as drivers take Junction avoidance routs, the edict has gone out across the whole company that staff aren’t allowed to take traditional London taxis any more — despite the firm occasionally slapping its livery on them — and they’ll have to rely on Uber to get around town instead.

The TP Icap is happy to advertise on London cabs, but staff may not enter them. Expenses department will also be bouncing back any claims for client entertaining including wine costing more than £80 a bottle: cue much chuntering at boss John Phizackerley, who’s apparently known on the trading floor as Ronnie Barker because of his resemblance to the departed comedy genius.

There’s not much laughing among the rank and file, however.

Controversial Uber app supports domestic and sexual abuse “UK Says No More Week”

via taxi-point https://ift.tt/2s3yNkL
The controversial ride-hail service Uber are to support a campaign against domestic abuse and sexual violence as it ramps up the PR campaign ahead of its battle to win back their London licence.
Uber have come under much scrutiny themselves both at home in the UK and across the world. This month alone has seen former employee Ingrid Avendano make claims of sexual harassment and racial discrimination in the work place and Uber driver Muhammad Durrani was sentenced to twelve years for sexually assaulting his passenger.
The much maligned minicab service also lost its London operators licence in September 2017 due to concerns to passenger safety and not being “fit and proper”. The appeal start next month 25th June and it is expected that Uber will run several PR campaigns in a bid to win over public confidence.
Uber are hoping to raise awareness of domestic abuse that affected an estimated 1.9 million adults and plus a further 648,000 were victims of sexual assault in England and Wales.
Working with Hestia and UK Says No More, Uber have also produced a short video providing information about domestic abuse and sexual violence. The video contains advice about how people can support potential victims and gives information on ensuring that everyone who uses Uber feels safe and comfortable throughout a journey. A spokesperson from Uber said: “This is part of our global commitment to use Uber’s scope and visibility to drive awareness, education, and prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence. In time, we hope to play our role in eradicating incidents across all sections of society.”

TfL Bottle It And Rethink On Basic English Language Tests For Minicab Drivers.

New rules forcing private-hire drivers in London to prove their English language skills are set for a rethink.

The rules would have forced them to pay £180 for a written essay and speaking test by July 16 this year, unless they could produce GCSE certificates proving their command of English.

Private-hire drivers unable to pass the test or produce certificates would have been banned from working as minicab drivers in the capital.

Today Transport for London said the deadline for drivers to prove their grasp of English had been extended until April 30 next year.

TfL said it would also now review the regulations, to “make satisfying the requirement as simple as possible”.

The announcement came after a crunch meeting between the Licensed Private Hire Car Association and Mayor Sadiq Khan yesterday.

TfL officials also met representatives of the British Dyslexia Association, which had warned that some private-hire drivers would find it “impossible” to pass the new test.

Steve Wright, the hire car association’s  chairman, said that “tens of thousands” of drivers, including those with reading and writing difficulties and from ethnic backgrounds, had feared they would lose their jobs.
