London Uber driver suspended after being filmed watching TV whilst driving

A driver working for controversial ride-hailing app Uber was caught on film watching football on his iPad while navigating the busy streets of London. His passenger, a 27 year old man was shocked to see his driver gazing at the action on his iPad as they headed to London's ExCel centre. The driver was reported to the police and to Uber themselves who have suspended him while investigations are ongoing. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the driver assured his passenger that it was perfectly safe for him to watch while driving and that there was nothing to worry about. The passenger, a Mr MacLeod, hit social media to express his concerns with a tweet reading:

Uber have always said that it's their policy to prevent private hire drivers from using their app while they investigate serious incidents. Uber are currently operating in London although TfL denied them a new licence. Transport for London granted them the right to continue operations while an appeal is ongoing. The appeal is due to start in June.

TfL allowed Uber to operate in the on-demand market without changing the legislation, holding a consultation or informing the Taxi Industry. Taxis and Private Hire (PH Vehicles) now operate in the same market. Taxis (stringently regulated) have to compete with PH who benefit from light touch regulation. TfL decide what vehicle Taxis drivers drive and set their fares, leaving drivers with no control or choice with regards to costs. PH Operators on the other hand have the flexibility to bring down fares and PH drivers have multiple choices of vehicles to keep their outgoings to a minimum. How do you expect the taxi trade to survive in London with such disparity created by TfL?

Transport for London (TfL) regulates according to standards that are provided for in primary legislation and regulations designed to ensure public safety.  It also regularly consults on changes to taxi fares and tariffs.

As you will be aware my Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan contains a number of measures to maintain a vibrant two tier market in London that gives space for all service providers to flourish. This includes measures designed to improve safety in the private hire industry and to support our world renowned taxis.

TfL recently published a new policy statement setting out how private hire and ride-sharing services will operate in London in the future. The policy has been written in response to changes in the private hire industry and the many new services being offered. It has been designed to ensure London remains the world leader in regulating taxi and private hire services while maintaining public safety.

A hacker who sold customer data on the dark web has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison by a judge at Southwark Crown Court. Grant West, 26, targeted customers of companies such as Asda, Sainsbury's, Ladbrokes, Coral, Argos and ride-hailing firm Uber. West, gained access to over 160,000 email addresses that he then used to contact people with scams to obtain more personal details.

The personal details were then sold on the dark web for bitcoin's. West had built up a huge caches of bitcoin and other crypto currency in online wallets. According to a report in the Guardian, £25,000 in cash and a stash of cannabis was found during a raid on his home, a caravan park in Kent. His online scam ran for two-and-a-half-years before he was arrested on a first class train carriage as he was accessing the dark web. A total loss of more than £1million was estimated by the prosecution. Judge Michael Gleghill said:"This case should be a wake up call to customers, companies and the computer industry to the very real threat of cybercrime."

London Uber driver spared jail after killing speeding pizza delivery man

A driver for the controversial ride-hailing app Uber has been spared jail in court this week after being accused of killing a speeding pizza delivery man.

Rakin Ahmed, 23, was driving for Uber in Maida Vale with a passenger on board when the collision took place. Mr Ahmed’s Toyota Prius hit the speeding Tops Pizza delivery bike killing Iqbal Faizurrahma.

The court heard that Mr Faizurrahma, 24 and a father or two, was travelling well above the 30mph limit, as the Prius turned onto Shirland Road from Sutherland Avenue in Maida Vale on 1st December 2016.

Despite the collision no jail sentence was given and Mr Ahmed retains his TfL private hire licence according to the regulators online licence checker.
